SUNY Delhi Welcomes Two Sponsored Refugee Students from Kenya
SUNY Delhi proudly welcomes two sponsored refugee students on campus this fall. Deeko
Abdille Mursal and Ikran Mohamed Dodi travelled to Delhi from Kenya to begin their
studies in the nursing dual degree program.
SUNY Delhi is one of only 17 colleges in the nation to welcome refugee students through
the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and the Welcome Corps on Campus this fall. As
an institute of higher education, Delhi offers a resettlement space and a life-changing
educational opportunity while the students enrich the campus community with their
life experience and international perspective.
“We hope you’ll find our college to be a caring and supportive community and a safe
place to call home for the next few years,” SUNY Delhi President Mary Bonderoff said.
“Your experiences and dreams are valuable, and I look forward to all of us learning
from each other over the next several years.”
Since their arrival two weeks ago, Deeko and Ikran have spent time getting settled
and adjusting to their new environment.
The students were sponsored by SUNY Delhi faculty and staff members Dan Gashler, Erin
Wagner, Allene Slating, and Lou Reyes, as well as community members Esther Lee, Hannah
Leighton, Sangeeta Pratap, and Mina Takahashi. Together, the sponsors worked with
the Welcome Corps on Campus and raised money to make this opportunity possible.
