I grew up in the small town of Bovina - located just a few miles outside of Delhi
- where I attended school (K-12) right here in Delhi (Delaware Academy). I earned
both a BS and MAT degree in Mathematics from Union College in Schenectady, NY and
then returned to Delhi in 1991 and began teaching Math here at SUNY Delhi.
Over the years I have taught every Math course offered at Delhi and have served on
various committees. I enjoy working with students and have done quite a bit of tutoring
with both college and high school students.
In my spare time, I enjoy running and completing projects around the house. I also enjoy visiting and spending time with my two children.
Prof. Joan Erickson
Associate Professor

Education: MS in natural sciences from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, BS in chemical
engineering from University of Mississippi
My name is Joan Erickson. I teach full time in the math department. My recent teaching assignments include College Algebra, Statistics, and PreCalc. My current academic interest is on corequisite (remediated) math students' engagement and conceptual learning. Understanding how they process the math material helps guide how I work with them.
My other interest is how to inspire multicultural sensitivity/curiosity in our students. This campus has a diverse student population and can benefit from more culturally based extracurricular events. A couple of us, along with Student Life, collaborated on activities but Covid disrupted our plan. We are looking to rebuild the events, and are always looking for more ideas.

I grew up here in Delhi with my parents and brother. After graduating high school,
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre,
PA (2000), and my Master's in Mathematics from Binghamton University (2002). At that
time, I made the decision to start in the workforce instead of continuing with my
education. I first worked for five years as a Mathematics Specialist at my Alma Mater,
King’s College. After getting married, my wife and I made the decision to settle back
in upstate NY, where we both grew up. I took a job teaching Middle School and High
School Mathematics Teacher at the Walton Central School District. In 2015, after seeing
a job posting for an Assistant Professor at SUNY Delhi, I decided to apply. I was
fortunate to get an interview and was later was offered the position.
At Delhi, I have tried to stay involved in improving our course offerings and strengthening
our program. I have invested a lot of time developing and instituting our quantitative
reasoning class. I am consistently revising lessons and assessments to help student
understanding. I currently serve as the Math and Science Representative on the Assessment
Committee. I enjoy learning about teaching and trying to increase engagement in my
classes, and I take pride in the effort that I put forth to be an effective teacher.
Outside of work, I currently live with my wife (Chrissy) and three children (Mayla, Nolan, and Cooper). I enjoy staying active around the house, working on home repairs, playing with my kids, reading about current events, and playing games, camping, and all things sports, specifically watching, playing, and learning about baseball. I enjoy exercising and staying active, both independently, and with my family. As my kids get older, I am spending more of my time watching them participate in their activities (sports, dance, music).

lab sections of several other courses since 2001.
I participate actively in campus activities and in numerous local community events.
I have numerous healthy hobbies and pastimes. I'm fairly well read and well-traveled.

I grew up on a small hobby farm in Williamsport. My bachelor’s degree is in Food
Science from the College of Agriculture at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn
State) with an emphasis in the science of milk and milk products.
I spent 30 years in the dairy processing industry, the last 17 years as a plant manager. The
science of milk, food processing, heat transfer, microbiology, cleaning and sanitation,
and my ability for decision-making was easy. It was the management of people and
building teams of people that was the real work.
So here I am, serendipitously, teaching people. I talk about myself in my classes
a lot - not because I want to talk about myself, and I tell my students that, but
because I worked and lived through much of what I teach—food science, food microbiology,
sanitation, and learning and experiencing things that I did not necessarily want to
know, yet had to act on.
In 2021, I earned a master’s degree in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology
from the University at Albany.
I have two adult children; over 20 sewing machines, a few of which I use constantly;
over 500 books - mostly cookbooks and quilting books - which I read or browse constantly;
always a novel of some sort with a bookmark in it, but rarely works of non-fiction;
and still have a really difficult time knitting anything other than square cotton
dishcloths.

I have been at the college full time since 2017 as the Manager of Networks and Security,
but have been an adjunct since 2013 teaching Math 102 in the evenings. My mom worked
for SUNY Delhi her entire career and I have been familiar with the campus almost my
entire life. I originally went to college for engineering but graduated with a BS
in Computer Science. I started my career with a local bank and received a Graduate
Degree in Banking along the way. I am currently earning my master's from SUNY Poly
in Cybersecurity.
I have always had a passion for construction, and have worked in the field part time
for over 30 years now, teaching myself plumbing, electric, HVAC and other related
fields along the way. I also have an interest in mechanics, and purchasing and refurbishing
automobiles and tractors. I always have something in the garage, yard, or even up
the street that I am working on.
I believe this is what makes me unique to teaching the Math 102 sections - the students
are all studying the things I love and appreciate - building, fabricating, and repairing!
We try to have fun in class, and I try to relate the mathematics to something they
will use in real life, whether reading a tape measure or solving a word problem.
