Getting Help
Helping Yourself
If you are a victim of sexual violence, the following is a list of options to consider. As a victim, you have the right to determine what response or action you feel is most appropriate for you. However, you are highly encouraged to take care of yourself, including seeking medical care.
- Get to a safe place and seek assistance (friend's place, hospital, police).
- Save evidence (do not shower, wash, change or discard clothes).
- Seek immediate medical treatment.
- Call a friend, a campus advocate, family member or someone else you trust who can give you support.
- Write down as much as you can remember about the event including description of assailant(s).
Helping a Friend
- Report any observed, experienced, or known sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual violence. It does not matter if it occurred on campus, off campus, at a nearby private college campus, on break, last week, or two years ago.
- Be a supportive listener.
- Provide information and resources.
- Let them decide the next steps.
- Seek assistance for yourself.
